Call for Artist – Frisco Downtown Marker

Frisco Downtown Marker
FRISCO STYLE MAGAZINE
ARTIST RENDERING FOR FRISCO DOWNTOWN GATEWAY MARKER
CALL FOR ENTRIES
The Frisco Downtown Merchants Association, in partnership with Frisco Association for the Arts, is seeking artistic renderings depicting a Downtown Gateway Marker, a possible large scale structure, on Main Street in Frisco, TX, which will serve to establish Downtown Frisco as a destination.
Project Description

The purpose of the call is to receive rendering for a Downtown Gateway Marker to be presented to city planners for future consideration and facilitate the conversation. This project is not sanctioned by the City of Frisco, but is a citizen-driven effort by private partners to distinguish Historic Downtown Frisco as a true destination.

contest
history
Design Criteria

The renderings should reflect Frisco’s heritage and history, helping to create downtown as a destination. Ideally, the structure should also allow for a way to communicate information about downtown events.

Although submissions will not be used as construction documents and are intended only as a source of inspiration, entries that demonstrate a knowledge of realistic construction practices and the City of Frisco’s planning and permitting process will have an advantage.

Location Description

While no specific site has been selected, the desired general location is on Main Street between County Road to the east and 1st Street to the west. The specific site(s) or art location(s) are open to the artist’s discretion and vision. The site should be open to the public, visibly and recognizably in Downtown Frisco. Downtown Frisco is considered the area from 8020 Main Street to the former silos/railroad tracks, and 2 blocks south of Main, 1 block north of Main.

History of Frisco

Special Considerations
1) Physical challenges of sign location (above/below grade public/private infrastructure) that would either prohibit and/or limit the signage.
2) Must meet ADA standards.
3) Any signage over the roadway needs to meet the minimum clearance height of 14-feet.
4) Attaching any signage to a building will be limited because of the building’s varying heights, and the building’s structure integrity.
Submission Requirements

Please submit the following by mail or email:

Resume or short biography
Up to 3 separate designs may be submitted by each designer.
Each design entered must consist of a minimum of two(2) two-dimensional renderings from different perspectives depicting the following:
Location
Scale
Construction materials

Eligibility
The competition is open to all who are interested.
Deadline
November 15, 2016
Prize
Frisco Style Magazine will award $500 for each winning design.

Great cause and wonderful Artist

John Egeland

Medium: Acrylic on canvas

                                                               Size: 16″ x 20″

Price: $2,000

The Guild is proud to assist John Egeland, one of its members, in a project we all feel is very worthy. John is a strong advocate of the homeless population in the Dallas area and donates much of his time to the cause. In addition, as part of our fall show Creme de la Creme, John is donating all profits from the sale of his beautiful painting, “Forsaken”, to the Dallas Life Foundation.

The story of Dallas LIFE starts with a man named Reverend Robert J. Key, one of the founders of the Union Gospel Mission in 1949. With Dallas’ homeless population growing in the post war years, Reverend Key left UGM to begin establishing the Dallas Rescue Mission. It was this endeavor that would become Dallas LIFE, now the largest homeless shelter in North Texas.
Dallas Rescue Mission opened its doors in 1954 in a small storefront location on Commerce Street. There, Rev. Key would minister to the men who came to him nightly for shelter and a hot meal. Rev. Key and his volunteers kept the shelter open every night for the next 25 years.

Please keep in mind that 3.5 million people in the US will be homeless this year. One third of those will suffer from chronic mental illness and 1.4 million will be children. These are staggering numbers that we should all want to see decrease rapidly. They need our help and we should all do our part to end the struggle for at least some of these.

Will you please help John, and more importantly the homeless community, by purchasing this beautiful work of art.

You can go visit our Creme de la Creme show and see this wonderful piece of art at the Frisco Discovery Center during normal business hours.

Announcement!

On January 1st, Frisco Arts Board President, Tammy Meinershagen announced in the Dallas Morning News – “Frisco Arts is looking forward to bringing the community together to celebrate the entire public art collection with an interactive, online map listing all locations, names of artists and mediums used. As part of this project, the Arts Board partnered with Frisco artist, and VAGF member, Milessa Murphy Stewart, who is painting a series of abstracts based on the public art. These paintings will be on display at the Frisco Arts Walk, and they are a unique way to show how art inspires us all. She began the project at the beginning of the year and is painting 52 sculptures abstracted, surreal or impressionistic.

Milessa’s first weekly project was of the beautiful and very large RED sculpture right off the Dallas North Tollway in Frisco located in the Hall Office Park.  Melissa noted, “Red is my favorite color.  Around the sculpture are some other sculptures of “people” I found interesting, too.  If you look closely at the oil painting you can see them gazing up and then another two bronze sculptures standing in front.”

Many of her paintings to-date have been the beautiful sculptures that Craig Hall, an art visionary, wine maker, entrepreneur and developer shares with the public at Hall Office Park off of the Dallas North at Gaylord and Warren.

The VAGF wants to congratulate Milessa on this wonderful honor. We are so proud of her on this accomplishment. We encourage everyone to go out to the Arts Walk to enjoy her works. Contact Frisco Arts at info@friscoarts.org for more information.milessa2

This weeks #MMSProject52 includes a painting I did from the Longhorn Park.
